The Riese und Muller (R&M) "Super Birdy" BD-1 Disc is the first bicycle that I bought new - I wanted something that could fold into a compact package so I can take it on trips with me, but I also wanted a folder with a sporty ride. I was also considering the Brompton SL2X titanium due to its compact fold and British roots, but the BD-1 was much faster and I liked the fact that it uses standardized parts which are fully upgradable. To me, a bicycle is an extension of myself and if I cannot personalize it, than I could never call it my own. To that end, I have taken the stock R&M BD-1 Disc and transformed it into a Super Birdy - meaning that it has been lightened using high-end componentry and the ride meticulously tuned using custom-made Kamoya suspension parts. People are always curious about how much the bike weighs - although it's lighter than a stock Birdy, the final weight is still around 10.5kg. It would have been nice to get it to be superlight so I don't have to carry so much weight when traveling, but most bikes weigh around that much, and this is no exception. I sacrificed weight for ride quality and convenience so although it's still a much different ride than my road bikes, but it is a ride very much my own.
